Section 8 Window Screen Requirements

HNY! We had a unit turn over and would like to fill vacancy with a Section 8 tenant. We have never been through an inspection but I know we need screens in all windows.

Do the window screens need to open? I've seen some where the screen does not open while others have the classic squeeze-to-open.

I ask because if they do not need to open I can build them myself but otherwise we have weird dimensions and will have to pay $$$ for custom...

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Shane,

I work with Milwaukee County Housing Services as a Landlord Engagement Coordinator.  We have a mixed bag of federally subsidized, as well as non-federally subsidized rent assistance programs, many which abide by rent assistance Housing Quality Standards requirements.

For Housing Quality Standards, screens are not actually required...if they are present, though, they must be in good condition so as to not posed a cutting hazard or other health and safety risk

Hope that helps
