Rebating Referral Fees

I have been talking to an individual on BP for some time as we have similar REI goals. There was one particular turnkey provider that this person asked about and we had fairly extensive dialogue about. A referral fee was not even something I was thinking about. In one of our recent communications, I was asked if I would be willing to return the referral fee if I was listed as their referral source. I was shocked when I read this and it seemed really petty, which definitely put a sour taste in my mouth. Just wondering whether this a common practice and I’m being overly sensitive.
