Well, news flash on the Today show, number one tax cheats are contractors, second is landlords. They even have it down to geographic areas, sections of LA, Dallas, some other cities were named.

If you haven't droped it in the mail yet, better double check...  :)

Check your milage log, match it to oil changes, gas reciepts on charge cards, rent collections at addresses, deposit dates at the bank, if you tie in supporting documents it makes it hard for that auditor to toss it out. :)

I LOVE poetic justice.....

Internal Revenue Service employees in Tennessee were stealing unemployment and other benefits while fully employed.

On Thursday, 13 of those employees were indicted on federal charges that they lied to get unemployment, food stamps, welfare and housing vouchers. An additional 11 have been indicted on state charges of theft greater than $1,000.

I had $7k for over 40 properties
& some of the gas expenses were 
For equipment we rented, bobcats etc
But as I concluded what she did allow more than compensated.

Jerred, they must claim to be in the entertainment business!

Any regulator type auditor will be all business up front to establish the tone of the examination, like you're in for it, sortta, if you are all smiles and friendly the one audited won't be as forthcomming with a sence of ugency and be as seriously involved, get thier attention. Then, depending on how it looks you can slack off the hard nose stuff and smile on the way out. Part of the game. :)

I went alone for both the experience & it was supposedly over the mileage deduction only.
The mileage was well documented but denied. However I was allowed to claim a minor amount against each property & I did have both gas, oil service records but she was nasty.
Not satisfied she expanded the audit & I excused myself to gather more documents etc .
So it went for another 2 days. But she did allow a lot more than I originally claimed.
It was an interesting time!!!!

Pat, did you hire representation or go it alone?

I was audited over the past few months for 2011 and they said I owed an additional $15k. I knew that was incorrect and had my CPA deal with it, and just got a no tax due letter last week.
