1099 Rents for a Property Management Assistant?

So I use to work for a property management company last year as a part time job in college. I just received a 1099 from them and it says that all of my pay was in rents? I was under the assumption that I would have been paid as a contractor since I just received a check with no taxes withheld. If anyone can clarify is this is correct or this seems wrong please let me know.
