Family Trusts, good asset protection for investments?

Greetings, I'm considering forming a family trust as a way to protect my investment properties (as well as other investments) from property liens, judgements etc. The intention is to build a successful investment portfolio and pass it on to my kids.

Does anyone have any experience with trusts? Is this a good idea or is there a better approach?
