Converting duplex into triplex

Good day everyone,

Has anyone experienced turning a duplex into a triplex? Zoning is for multi family homes. House is currently registered as two but want to turn it into a three. Has anyone gone through this process before ? Does it take months to go through the town municipality? The house has all capability to be a three family. Attic is huge with walk up stairs on both sides and can be turned into a two bedroom.

Thanks

I have a duplex in NJ, trying to do the same with a 3rd floor or an ADU. However, I strongly suggest to seek a structure engineer or architect/drafter that guide/help you on planning and dealing with zoning permits as well. It will cost but worthy, you don't want the zoning headaches
