How did you go about finding your mentors?

Not sure if this is the right group to post this in but I'm interested in meeting more people in real estate to talk with a long the line of mentors, so planning on joining my local real estate group but I also see on other sites or driving around houses for rent and was thinking about calling to talk with the landlords and other investors, only problem I have no idea how to go about the conversation, so looking for pointers on how to not come across wrong in any way? How did you increase your networks or find mentors? Thanks in advance
