Things to Look for in an Investment Club

There's no shortage of experienced investors telling newbies to join your local REI club, for many good reasons. I'm one of those newbies, and I find myself with multiple REI associations close by (4 in the San Diego area, to be exact).

With most REI clubs charging monthly dues, how do you determine which club is worth getting involved in? One option is to just pick a club and dive right in. But are there things to look for (or look out for) before getting involved with your local club?

I'd love to hear about your experiences with various REI associations. What makes an investment group exceptional?

@Stephen Watt, first, and in full disclosure, I'm on the board for the NSDREI.

I having attended the local San Diego clubs for several years and the nominal $20.00 fee to attend is used to pay for the venue and to run the club. I would suggest you set aside about $200 and attend several of the meetings and decide for yourself which one will be right for your investment needs.

The clubs here generally do not pitch coaching or high priced mentorships. One club that I am not associated does provide investment opportunities from time-to-time with their owners and they are associated with a very large RE education program. When you go, guard your wallet and take your time evaluating each club.
