Trial by fire or tutoring

So what I have been reading up on lately to increase my income has stressed to cut expenses and gain additional revenue streams. With that being said I am looking into doing PM on the side of my job. My question is is that a job that is trial by fire or the type you must be tutored to learn? I prefer trial by fire but I don't want to ruin someone's investment.
