Keeping Expenses Low Build New Single Family Homes

My father-in-law is a builder and is helping us get started in the business. He mentioned that we could, especially starting out, probably build a house cheaper than he could because he doesn't have time to shop around for deals on materials and such. It occurred to me that there may be certain things we could do relatively easily to save on construction costs and there may be places to get inexpensive building supplies maybe online or elsewhere. Does anyone have ideas along these lines?
