How Much Knowledge Of Construction Do You Need For Value Add REI?

I've been very curious about how much construction knowledge is required for doing a value add commercial real estate project? Do you just trust your general contractor or is it much better to have prior construction knowledge yourself?

@Rafael W. knowlege is helpful; but you don't really need any. I don't trust my contractor any more or less than anyone else. Get referrals, have an agreement that sets expectations, and never let them get ahead on money or you may never see them again!
