Moving to LA, California with US Air Force. Looking to learn from others in the area.

My first assignment location from Officer Training School will be at the LA Air Force Base. I would like to put my housing allowance to good use and invest in my first rental property with either a duplex, triplex, or quadplex so I can live in one of the units and rent out the other(s). I plan on getting a VA loan to finance the investment. I am open to any and all advice, and I'm almost done reading the "Ultimate Beginners Guide..." but I have so much more to learn. Let me know if you know of any great resources to get started with this sort of thing.
