Zoning for Multifamily
Hi everyone!
I have a question about zoning for multifamily properties. How do I go about finding if an area I am considering investing in allows multifamily properties? I am thinking about possibly converting a basement into a second unit to live in and house hack the upstairs. I just wanted to gather relevant information as I begin this process.
Thank you all for the help!

In most cities, you can go to the city website, click on Zoning, and navigate to a Zoning Map. If the land isn't currently zoned for multifamily you can check the Comprehensive Plan, which shows future zoning plans. Also, it's always worth calling or visiting a zoning administrator to ask your questions. I would recommend looking at the maps before you call, so you can have an intelligent conversation. City officials get tired of dealing with people that are too lazy to look up information that is available on their website.
