License for short sale

I have a friend who wants me to do a short sale on their house. I wouldn't be the buyer I would just be helping to get the house sold. Now if my understanding is correct I would need a real estate license in order to receive payment, but if I did it for free I wouldn't need the license. I just need some clarification on this issue and if there is any work around on this issue.

If you want to help your friend, find them an experienced short sale real estate agent. It's obvious from your question, you wouldn't know where to begin, let alone being experienced with them. No offense intended, but there can be a number of moving parts in a short sale that need to be anticipated, and dealt with.
