VA Loan with older house

I'm curious if anyone has had any luck with purchasing a older home using a VA loan? My husband and I have been looking into using it in Vermont to house hack. All of the multi families there are rather old. I've been told VA appraisals have very strict guidelines. So I'm looking for someone that may have had success with this, as I'm concerned the that the older properties wouldn't pass an inspection.
