Buying property directly from probate attorney

Hi everyone,

I've recently found an abandoned property in my neighborhood where the owner has passed away. After doing further research I was able to find the attorney handling the estate and was given a payoff amount. However the original amount owed is only half of the payoff amount. So I was wondering if the payoff amount is negotiable as half of it is interest and penalties. His secretary also mentioned that if I was serious about this she would let the attorney know so that they can stop it from going to foreclosure. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!!
