Converting duplex into townhouses

Does anyone here on BP have experience in converting a duplex into townhouses and then selling them individually?  I am looking at an opportunity in San Jose, CA.  The duplex is vacant so I won't have to deal with tenant issues.  Most particularly, what type of costs are involved and timeline.  Anyone?
