Interested in property purchase

This morning, while doing my ride for dollars run, I spotted a property that I have a question about. I think it's an REO. There were letters attaced to the door/window that said the following:

1) House found abandoned.

2) The property has been winterized.

What steps do I take to find out more/secure the property. I'd like  to live in it, and eventually sell or rent.
