Real Estate Licensure

I am not in real estate but I own my home. I'd like to begin developing a portfolio of investment/rental properties and I'm considering getting my real estate license so that I can save the agent's fees. Would this be worth my while? Would I be able to transact independently (for my own deals? for other people?) or would I need to work under a broker? Would it only save $ when I'm selling a property or would it save money on the buying side too? I'm new to this so any insight would be helpful!
