Buying homes via Auction.com

What are the benefits and pitfalls of buying properties via Auction.com.  There is a few properties in my area and I am wanting to bid on them but what do I need to check before bidding on them?  It doesn't look like I can go inside as these are pre-foreclosures with people living in them on a couple.  So I will assume they are disasters inside, although from the outside they appear not too bad.

Have tried to talk to those owners directly? That's what I plan on doing tomorrow.
