Are there any great Letter writers out there?

So here is the challenge,

There is a property that I would like to acquire, but the property is not for sale at this time.  I would like to approach the owner, by making an offer for their property via a letter.  H

Has anyone out there made an approach like this before, and was you successful in making a purchase from a 'cold call' stance?

Is this a crazy way of trying to buy a property?  I do work on the principle... If you don't ask you don't get.  But am I taking this one too far?

I know, questions, questions, questions... but how else do I learn uh?

Hehehe.

I look forward to hearing some well creative ways to approach this

Thanks in advance.

If it's a particular property and you have some rationale for why you really want this property, I'd suggest a face-to-face discussion with the owner.  A letter can be easily discarded and ignored, but face-to-face, he'd know you were serious, you'd have the opportunity to make your case and he'd be forced to at least answer you (even if the answer is no).
