Inspection on New Construction

I have a close friend buying a new construction home and he asked me about a home inspection on his house.  He asked me what I would do and I told him I probably wouldn't spend the money on an inspector but I would certainly walk the entire house and go over it with a fine toothed comb as an inspector would.  Since I have never bought new construction, I wonder if the builder would even repair the items I pointed out and if it would be a stronger argument with a licensed inspectors report.

So that got me thinking, what would all of you do in this case?

Builders expect a punch list on a new home, don't hire home inspector, walk it yourself
