Hello - I'm in the process of buying a house.  The regional lender referred me to a broker, who he thought could offer me rates. I'm able to get a much better rate (at least 0.5% lower than if I went to a national bank) from the broker but the broker has a Gmail address.  Is this normal/legitimate?  He's in NMLS (the number is, but I haven't met him in person).  His pricing is very good but should I be worried?

Sometimes mortgage brokers or any kind of agent working on a commission basis for themself will prefer to use a personal email to work; in that way, if they were ever to change companies they won't lose all their contacts and business correspondence.  I wouldn't be too concerned about it.
