Hus/Wife on Lease, Physical Abuse - Can I change the lock on one of the two?

Hey BP,

Suppose there are two individuals on a lease; one was physically abused (not reported to the Police), and the one who was assaulted asked to change the lock on the front door.  Can I legally change the lock and not give the other person (at fault) a key?

Any advice or tips here are welcome. I'm reading through my lease right now but I want to see what anyone else in this situation has done to be protected legally / do the right thing.

Thanks!

Sounds like you're getting in the middle of something you shouldn't be. If they want the other party out of the house they need to contact police or the courts and get a protective order barring said person from the residence.
