Unexperienced Real Estate Agent Aspiring to Become a Broker
Hi,
I'm a 20 year old that has had a FL real estate license for two years now. So far I haven't had a client. I've door-knocked neighbors and cold-called expired listings but with no success. Maybe I should've persisted-I possibly could have gotten better at it and maybe could have landed a client. However, due to to my mildly shy and reserved nature, I am considering upgrading my license to broker status- I'd rather have agents working for me and not have to initiate conversations and cajole clientele. The problem is I don't have the experience necessary to set up and operate a brokerage (I know money is another factor as well but I plan on doing this in the near future). To offset my lack of experience and knowledge, I've thought about becoming a broker associate at my current brokerage and receive mentoring from the principal broker and possibly read books that may augment my theoretical and practical knowledge in operating a brokerage.
If anyone would be kind enough to share their thoughts and/or advice on how I can acquire the knowledge to operate a brokerage, please do so, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Luis O.

Hi THere! My recommendation is to make sure you know all your stuff regarding being an agent prior to working on becoming a broker. You wont be able to get your own brokerage until you have experience and know-how as an agent. New agents will be coming to you as the broker for advice and you wont have the necessary tool and practical knowledge unless you have worked in the trenches of real estate.
So what I recommend is to work for a great agent in your area doing all the basic stuff they no longer want to do. Open houses, showing property, Ask them to keep you in the loop during the transactions so you can see the negotiations, the tough conversations, the listing appointments and learn and learn and learn. This is a sales job so you will have to overcome the shyness to succeed, but working for another agent until you feel confident is a good way to go.
I got my start in sales by working at Enterprise rent a car renting cars. Any company with a great sales program will work for this. Your learn the ropes and feel confident and you can go sell anything.
Best of luck to you!
