I just received my Maryland license a few months back.  I would encourage you to take the course in a class, NOT online.  The information is not really complex, but there is a good bit to learn and the instructors help guide you on how best to prepare.

As for brokers, I am an investor and looking at maximizing the deals I do.  I went with a broker that pays 100% commission, but I have been through a number of transactions and have experience with the contracts and paperwork that are needed.  The MREC requires you to follow strict guidelines on many things.  As the previous gentleman mentioned, you may want to link with a broker that is very available.  You will give up some commission to them, but it will be worth it at least initially.  Good luck.
