What's a broker for?

I've been thinking about getting my real estate license...and I've been thinking. What's the purpose of a broker? Why is one required? What do they do for agents? Like could I work from home as an agent? What kinds of costs would I have to pay? How long do I have to stay with them?

@Account Closed, the bottom line is if you want a license, in all 50 states plus DC, you have to work under a managing broker for a minimum of 2 years, and in some states, 3 years. Your license will be inactive unless you are employed by a managing broker. Unless you are an attorney, there is no way around this.

They don't teach you very much in real estate school. You learn it all on the job. Find a great broker who knows what they are doing.
