Specializing in one type of property to sell

I am a licensed agent in Rhode Island. I have been working in the rental business ( Finding renters for landlords) Now I plan to start selling property's and obtaining listings. It seems like many agents will take anything that comes there way.

I would like to specialize in multifamily property. Make that the main focus of my business. Mainly because I enjoy investments and I can understand investors because I have the mindset of an investor. I would also love helping people achieve their financial goals through Real estate.

A couple agents have told me this is a bad business plan and to sell anything and everything you can. I do not think this is the right approach. My goal is to bring value to people and In my mind one way to do that is to specialize and become an expert in a particular niche. I would love feedback.

@Chris Lynch, I think it all depends on what sort of income you are expecting from being an agent. If this is your sole source of income, you might be better taking their advice and selling anything you can, while holding on to the multi family specialty.

I'm not familiar with your market at all, but if multifamilies take a long time to sell, perhaps you should look for a second source of income until your multifamily listings take off.
