Why do you love your Brokerage?

Good afternoon,

I'm a new agent and I'm looking at picking a Brokerage company to work for. I already interviewed one that I really like but I'm curious why everyone chose the brokerage they work for and why they enjoy working in that brokerage firm? Was it for the training, commission splits, environment? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Congrats at entering the Real Estate world!

I'm with Keller Williams in Las Vegas. Before achieving my real estate license, I was extremely interested in the investing side of real estate. My intrigue of real estate investing is what pushed me to get my license. I really just wanted access to the MLS, but I also wanted to learn every day and be around like-minded people.

I chose Keller Williams because their education and information that they provide are phenomenal. I'm a sucker for education because I believe information is the most valuable commodity (Gordon Gekko). Alongside the education, my office brings a family-oriented vibe that is very welcoming and supportive.

In the beginning of my realtor career, I valued more education and experience first over money. As I slowly gain experience, money will slowly show itself. However, I will forever be a student.

What's your goal? The brokerages core values and goals should align with yours. If you want to be an investor and are surrounded by concierge service type agents you are not going to benefit from it. A flower blooms because of it's environment, not because it doesn't want to

One of the major things you'll have to look into is how the company allows you to promote yourself and build your brand. That and training/close observation in the first months and years is crucial. Some brokerages might only allow you to promote yourself to an extent and instead requires you to promote the name of the brokerage, then you're simply there to represent the brokerage for those buyers and sellers. You're paying the brokerage name a split to uphold their brand name. Some brokerages offer great training to learn and get your feet under yourself, but my main point would probably be this... Your most important asset is your sphere and the ability to promote YOU. Because years down the road, what happens if you're unhappy at the company and lose your CRM? Or you fear leaving your brokerage even though you're unhappy but you're afraid you'll lose that brand name you have cultivated over the years? You have to start over... But the ability to promote yourself is huge in the long run.

@Kevin Taylor, eXp Realty is a very 'investor-friendly' brokerage that enables me to buy/sell my own properties without taking a split of the commission, I can scale and grow my team throughout the US and abroad and receive passive income and build a retirement nest egg while selling real estate and growing my team.  Love it!

As a new agent, my focus was more on the training and environment than the commission because I knew that the returns will come with a strong foundation and proper mentorship. Being on Biggerpockets, you are already ahead of majority of the agents out there in the investor crowd with your vocab and being able to speak the language. Real estate is very local so it is beneficial to work the most reputable local brokerage that offers the proper support.

As Eliot mentioned your core values should be in alignment with the brokerages’ core values. One of the owners of my brokerage is a savvy investor that owns short term rentals, storage units, and commercial buildings and being able to spend time with him and watch closely what he does allows me to mirror him and start making the moves he did early in his career. I think of him as my “rich dad” (rich dad poor dad). Our brokerage is very keep it simple stupid (kiss), be somewhat cautious about over training in real estate...while you are in class learning on how to make a perfect listing presentation other agents are out there knocking on doors to get the listing. Training, support, and culture fit are the 3 top things that come to mind.

Commission splits are generally about the same and generally differ depending on how many "perks" the firm will provide. If the brokerage takes more money out of your commission, then you likely will get more "free" things such as marketing, signage, education material, etc. At the end of the day, it takes time to build your personal brand.

Most markets have a glut of RE agents and to be a part of the 20% of agents that sells 80% of the real estate will be based primarily on your personal motivation and ingenuity for building your brand, finding leads, and helping clients progress through the sales funnel.

Basically pick a strategy that has proven to work and run with it. I really liked David Greene's books on BP for agents, definitely worth a read.
