How did YOU get started?

Hello BP, 

I would like to know more about the process of getting started. Obviously education and understanding are a major factor, but what specifically do you feel gets overlooked as a crucial stepping stone towards a successful investing career? 

My primary focus is on LTR and eventually moving into STR and vacation homes so that I can travel with my family and enjoy our youth while building wealth for the future.

I am an information gatherer by nature, so any insight provided is greatly appreciated!
