There are a few ways to look at house hacking. If you do not own a primary residence than buying an SFR, or 2-4 unit can allow you to put little to no money down. Live in one unit and rent out the others which pays for your mortgage and can allow for you to live rent free or pay down the mortgage faster. You could also use it to just apply for a primary residence using less money down if you do not own anything and in the short term flip it and sell for a profit. Also once you own the property 2-4 unit for example you could borrow from the equity to make a bigger down payment to purchase a larger primary home.
