Just getting started

Hello investors! My name is Sam Olson. First post here on BP. I have a ton of questions but i just wanted to start by asking a few. My future goals are to invest in a duplex, triplex, or fourplex, live in one of the units and rent the others out. After expenses, use the income from the other tenants to help pay for the mortgage on the property and eventually move out and invest in a primary residence for my family and i while holding onto that first investment for cash flow. I’d like to get my foot in the door with this strategy and eventually invest in commercial, specifically multifamily. Is this a good way to get started? Also should i let my poor credit from bad decisions in my younger years keep me from investing? Should i keep working to pay off my debt completely before i take out a loan on a duplex or something slightly larger? Please share any thoughts you might have, anything is appreciated.
