I was wondering what the best sites were for scouting out neighborhoods to understand comps and just to develop momentum for doing my first deal.

If you have access to the MLS, that would be the best. Zillow, Trulia and Redfin are pretty good if you don't. For demographic information, the best free site I've found is City-Data.com.
