Did You Know Your Phone Has the Capability to Call People?
Just starting out, the term Real Estate, and making the statement “I’m involved in Real Estate” seems rather intimidating. You always tend to think of big shots in an ivory tower somewhere smoking a stogie laughing counting stacks of cash from their “real estate” profits. The truth is that is not the case for the people actually involved in real estate. It is not kick your feet up and watch the profits roll in. It is feet on the ground, hard work, and constantly calling people.
Not texting, not emailing… CALLING. Yes the phone in your pocket or on your desk actually still has the ability to make phone calls. Emails will get ignored. Texts will not be responded to. There is no way to successfully avoid a call. If the other person picks up, great. If they don’t and you leave a message now they have a task they need to do which is call you back. So why call? Can’t I send a professional email?
A call establishes who you are. A phone call showcases the type of person you are as well as gets some insight to the person you are talking to. You are able to tell right away if you can relate to the other person on the line, or if you need to find a way to connect. A bland email saying “Hi I’m so and so, and my real estate goals are X”, is so painstakingly boring it was hard to write this. A text is more personal but still a lot can be lost in translation in a text. Ever receive a text and wonder what the other person meant by it? Worse yet ever send a text and look back on it and wish you could have re-phrased it? Same here.
If you actually call someone you are able to be yourself. You are able to explain and state who you are, what your goals are, and better yet gauge the interest, personality, and professionalism of the other person when you have a conversation with them.
Whether you are wanting to know about a property, interview an agent, speak to a bank, vet a property manager, ask a contractor questions, a call will shed more light than you thought possible. Inevitably a call will lead to other topics of conversation you are interested in and often the other person will lead it there. If you get someone comfortable with you on the phone they will open up about other investment opportunities, recommendations for contractors, their own experiences, what to do what not to do when starting out, and all you have to do is call someone.
Emails are often too short and sweet and texts never accomplish what you are out to do which is make people aware you are in the real estate game. Once you call and talk to someone you are permanently on their radar. They will think of you now. They will put the sound of your voice to your name. They will remember a funny tidbit about you or an interesting story you had.
You might be worried about how people are too busy these days or no one wants to talk on the phone anymore. I can guarantee you no one is too busy to chat on the phone for 2 minutes these days. It probably took longer than that to read this article. So stop reading, start calling, and connecting with other people. Then get your stogie ready because this is how it all starts.
