Starting Out Local in REI

Hello everyone,

For all those who have already started their REI career, I was wondering how many of you began by investing in your local area, or a place within driving distance from where you live, as compared to outside your local area, as in an area in another state that may have a better real estate market. Right now I see starting off locally as almost imperative because it allows for easier qualitative observation of the property, easier management of the purchase and sale of that property, and easier management of the property itself. However, I would really like to know if it is so imperative.

TLDR: I want to know how much starting off locally in REI matters.

Thanks so much!
