REI while serving active duty military

Hello, I am currently serving active duty military and have been reading up on REI and became really interested. I plan to start saving and actually give it a try, that is after I actually understand and feel fully competent. I want to know if there are any difficulties or concerns I should be aware of since I am currently serving. Should I wait until I'm done? And then start from there? Or could I start once I feel confident in my knowledge and savings? ( I am aware that it is fully up to me but I'd just like some insight from others in my position or has been).
