Updated over 8 years ago,
Are you a new investor (like me)? Podcasts and audio books.
I'm a relatively new active investor. I've had a rental for 10 years but that was more a matter of circumstance then an active decision. In the past 6 months I've been able to flip 1 home and I am looking for more. Bigger Pockets was a huge resource in helping me be profitable in the first flip. It has also been a huge resource in helping me determine my future steps.
I thought I'd point out how I've effectively used BP to accelerate my learning curve.
When I first discovered BP I was spending a large amount of time scouring the forums looking for every nugget of wisdom I could find. This is very time consuming and a bit overwhelming information wise. I was forgetting way more than I could remember. Then I stumbled onto the podcasts.
If you are like me, a new investor that is pretty much a blank slate, then you need a lot of general information first so you can drill down to specifics with context. The fastest way to get this info is to listen to BP podcasts and the audio books they recommend. The great thing about this is it can be accomplished while doing other tasks like driving, yard work or household chores. It's not the time sync that pouring through forum posts is.
Since joining BP I've listened 50+ podcasts and am on my 8 book. These have opened my eyes to the real secret of real estate investing, CREATIVITY. Anyone can hire a realtor and go the normal MLS route but that isn't going to lead you to a very profitable outcome. I'm not a naturally creative person so the podcasts have been a treasure trove of ideas on how to expand my approach.
So, now I listen. Then if something peaks my interest I log on to the forums and search that topic and learn all I can about it. Really saves me time in mindless info overload perusing.
Hope this helps other new investors like me.
