How to get a job in Real Estate?

Hello BP Community!

Very brief and quick question, How do I get a job in the real estate industry with no experience and what sort of options are there?

Just a little about me:

1. I currently work in the retail industry(TERRIBLE!) so I want to switch over to a real estate related job to learn more about the real estate industry since my #1 goal for 2016 is to buy my first rental property.

2. My last few jobs has all been customer service related

3.I have a BA degree in Sociology (doesn't really serve much of a purpose)

4. I am terrible at sales so preferably not an agent or broker

5. I live in NYC

Hi Nylisha (Fellow sociology major!) -- Let me encourage you to take the real estate salesperson class. First you will learn about real estate and you will also meet others who are interested in real estate. If you are not involved in a real estate investor's association (REIA) find a local one and attend some meetings.

I am an introvert and NOT interested in selling anything.  Yet, I consider myself a good real estate broker.  (I am trained as a lawyer so I am good at negotiating contracts.)  But I think that my clients like me because I am not trying to "sell" them anything.  We talk about what they want, I try to get it for them.  I give them the pros and cons and they make the decision.

Of course, access to the listing service and showing properties also helps me with my own investment portfolio.

Another option may be to do admin work for some of the brokerages or even realty teams.  If you have your license you could stand in at open houses (maybe even get a share of the commission just for helping).

Good luck!  Teresa
