Choosing type of investment in New York

Hello BP community! My name is Ekaterina, new to RE and BP but excited about this new beginning! I've read Forum and noticed that people are extremely generous with their advice and comments. Thanks you BP members! I would really appreciate some advice as well! I moved to NY from Russia 7 years ago and lived in all boroughs except for State Island since then. I currently own shares in coop in Riverdale, Bronx and plotting making my first REI move. Since I am new to the industry I would like to see if any of you might have experience with REI in New York/Greater NY area and could save me headache figuring out feasible REI opportunities/types in NY area at the moment. I was quite passionate about the idea of owning and renting out multi-family homes however quick MLS search in my area yielded no inventory, so it got me thinking that I might just have to see what type of investment makes sense in my area instead of just focusing on what type I like. Would greatly appreciate you sharing your experience, thoughts, ideas! Thank you!
