Realistic Expectations

Being born and raised in San Francisco I would like to get my start here as a real estate agent. I know it's very difficult out here, but I have met with a few realtors recently and they both told me that I won't make any money my first year.

I don't know whether they were just trying to scare me off or if it's true. I really love real estate so it ain't gonna work! Either way, is it realistic to make a livable wage your first few years? Whatever it takes I'll do it. I also work part-time as a bartender, a job I plan of keeping until I get established.

Anyways, I know how much one makes is entirely up to ME, but I was just curious as to what people think is true, about not making any money your first year or two. Thanks for your time y'all!

Hi @Jonny C.

I am not a real estate agent, but I will take what the other agents told you with a grain of salt. You want to be their competition, so they may or may not tell you the truth.

When you first start out, some people will support your goal and some will bash your plans because they don't want to see you succeed. I learned it very quickly when I was starting out and I aligned myself with people who had my best interest in mind.

BP has been a huge resource for my RE knowledge and there are tons of people from your area here on BP and I am sure a lot of them will be willing to help you guide in the right direction.

Best wishes for your future success.
