Property Management Company in CA

Hello, 

I have done some research on becoming a property manager/opening my own property management company in CA. I have always read that I will need to become a real estate agent first. But recently one of my acquittances said she has her own property management LLC without a real estate license in CA.

I was wondering if I am missing something in my research. Is it possible for me to become a property manager without a real estate license?
