Point me in the right direction

Hello, my name is Danny. I've always been interested in real estate and I'm excited to start. I'm brand new to the world of real estate and im interested in buying rental properties as well as house hacking. But how should i be doing to further my education BEFORE buying a property. A few question i have is, i live in NY which is 1 not cheap (most likely will be getting a FHA loan) & also no landlord friendly, should i focus on buying a place outside of ny? If so, how far outside is too far? Lastly, when i am ready what is best for someone new to this all, house hacking or rental property or doesnt matter?
