First Househack: Duplex or Triplex

Javon Wilson
Posted

Hi Investing Community,

I plan on househacking after i finish living in an apartment. I know the situation varies from person to person, but would you rather buy a duplex or triplex for your first deal and why?

Hey @Javon Wilson - all things considered equal, if you have the opportunity to buy more units without it straining your cash reserves too much - do that.

You want to leverage your preapproval as much as possible for your first acquisition if you can (it's what I would have done had I restarted, instead I bought a single family to begin with).

You could argue that buying a SFH to start is more manageable though, less tenants to deal with.
