Finding a management company

Hi All, 

Hopefully the answer to this is pretty quick but I'll ask it anyways.  When starting your real estate investment career and you're looking for a management company, do you ask to speak to references from their other clients before signing up?  That being said, what red flags do you look for when considering a management company?
