Best brokerages to join as a new agent?

Hello BP,

I got my real estate license and I’m exploring my options as to which brokerage to join. The most important thing I’m looking for is mentorship and support to help me jumpstart my career in real estate. I’m looking at national and local brokerages. I’m located in DuPage County, IL and I look forward to hearing all your recommendations!

Anthony, look around for a small shop where the broker only has a few agents but has a good reputation.  The problem with the big shops that have dozens and even hundreds of agents is the broker has little time to mentor you.  After all, it's the broker who started the business and in most (but not all) will be the most experienced in the office.  Why settle, learn from the best.

When you have years of experience and have learned the business then it may not matter where you go.  Agents tell me all the time they can't get time with their broker, that's a shame.  FYI, under state law, the broker is personally responsible for your conduct and is obligated to train you.  Laws do not usually specify that it has to be the broker in-person training you but that person is responsible.

Look for the right team if you want mentorship. Brokerages are there to offer training but not mentorship. Find a small team with leadership that will take you where you want to go and has a track record of doing it with other agents.

I would consider joining a team. If that is the case, then it doesn't matter what brokerage you are with. I think there is this notion that brokers will mentor you. Few will. They just bring you on as another agent and hope you sell well. A team can provide the mentorship you are looking for.

I'm with a small brokerage in LA. Some clients prefer it but it doesn't have the perks that the bigger companies have in house. I love where I work but just something to think about.

I have only ever been with EXP.

I think it’s a great choice if you are:

super bought into the model

part of an internal group that is supportive

connected with a great mentor

tech savvy

comfortable working remote

Self sufficient

Resourceful

Need flexibility

Not a bad idea to join a team if you want to get things going quicker. Perhaps interview teams instead of brokerages if you want to go that route. At the end of the day the brokerages all have pros and cons!

Hi Anthony - new agent in Naperville here. I started out with Baird & Warner. They aren't a national broker, but very well know and provide great training. Keller Williams is another one that provides great training.
