Best States For Canadian Looking For Buy & Hold In USA

Hey! 

I'm very green to investing in the USA as far as the State and Federal regulations go so I wanted to ask...

Are there some states that are better than others for starting to invest in? 

Are there some states that have looser tax laws than others to allow for more profits? 

Are there some states with a higher rent to price ratio than other states? 

Thanks in advance for your answers, I'm open to other tips and things I should research to better educate myself.
