Austin STR Laws Change

I don't know if everyone else has gotten the same email I got from Airbnb this morning talking about how they're changing the tax collection for the city of Austin. They're going to be collecting it from the booking now. Does this 11% tax kill any STR deals you have?

Email Body below:

Great news! Airbnb will start collecting and remitting the following tax(es) imposed by the below City for all reservations booked on or after April 1, 2025.

City Name:

  • Austin, TX

Tax(es) Name(s):

  • Local Hotel Occupancy Tax

Guests will see a separate line item for the tax(es) when booking. Airbnb will collect and pay the tax(es) to the jurisdiction at the next filing due date.

Replied

Not in Austin - but all this is saying is that they are now collecting and remitting on your behalf.  Before this change it was you responsibility to charge, collect, and remit.  The number should not be changing, just the way it is collected and remitted.  If you were not collecting and remitting in the past, you should hope TX Dept of Revenue is not as good as they are here in FL because they will be sending you a bill otherwise.
