what are some of the best ways to find info on the area you plan on investing in?

How does one determine quality of schools for an area?How does one determine crime rate? How is this measured and which amount would usually indicate a B or C class property?

Looking for opinions for best tool(s) for areas to learn crime rate, economical growth, unemployment, future job opportunities, school rating and such.Any experience with and or referrals would be appreciated!Thank you!
