If that's not practical for some reason, he can get an inexpensive stethoscope, hold it to pipes and listen for flow.

I just replaced the main water supply line on a rental this week. this leak was impossible to miss but I have had them in the past where they are undetectable unless you listen to the actually pipe with a stethoscope or whatever similar tool the plumber uses.
