I also inherited one tenant and I raised the rents right away and he told me that he couldn't pay because his wife this and that and he didn't have a job because this and that, in the end I found out he was getting financial aid through stamps and the government.

My father worked for the federal government for 40-plus years and, thank God, he has a decent pension, but it’s basically exactly what he needs for living expenses and the modest things he likes to spend money on, like buying books, traveling to visit his grandchildren and buying them presents.
